Surfworld promises to be one of the premier indoor leisure destinations within the UK, providing an exhilarating mix of water-based activities for all ages. We were invited to submit a prototype design proposal for the project that explored how the Surfworld concept could be applied to different sites around the country. Our response was to create a unifying roof structure that provides ultimate flexibility of layout beneath, and a strong visual identity for the ‘brand’. Working in conjunction with Buro Happold we developed a responsive roof structure that took its inspiration from water molecules; the form of the roof determined by the specific spans required below from layout and context. The layouts were developed in conjunction with industry specialists Gowdridge + Thomason.
